Sisterhood

We're sisters...
One of the most mentioned aspects of sorority life is the friendship that exists between members of a chapter. Sorority life promotes the development of close ties between members through living, studying, working, and having fun together.

If you were to ask a Panhellenic sorority member the most important aspect of her college experience, you will no doubt hear about the lasting friendships made through her sorority. Friendships are not exclusive to sororities, but they provide a different kind of friendship that is different from other student organizations. Relationships develop and grow on a deeper level within sororities, a these lifetime relationships go beyond ordinary friendships to become like that of a family. Overall, sisterhood is nurtured through living together, shared work, social interactions, community service projects, and the successes and frustrations of involvement with a self-governing body.

Friendships develop and grow whether or not a member lives in the chapter house. Being part of a sorority and living in the chapter house provides opportunities to get to know your sisters on a different level. These lifetime relationships go beyond ordinary friendships to become like that of a family. Sororities also plan sisterhood events to bring the members living in and out of the house together. These events include dinners, ice skating, working out together, going to a movie/show, game nights, and philanthropic activities.

The Greek experience is for life. After graduation, sisterhood bonds continue. Women are roommates, bridesmaids in weddings, and Godmothers to their sisters' children. They attend their graduate school commencements, take vacations together, and Sorority women also have the opportunity to join alumnae chapters. Sorority alumnae chapters can be found all over the United States and around the world. The alumnae chapter is a great way to meet new people that you already share something in common with as you settle down in a new area.

Sororities provide a small, close group that helps women build friendships that do not just while they are at Northwestern - they last a lifetime.
